Poker

Poker is one of the most popular card game(s) in the world. It has reached a large audience with the recent popularity of Texas Hold-em. The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is now the 11th most popular sport rated by North American Sports fans. The popularity of poker has caused increased exposure to poker professionals and the rise of TV Shows, Brick and Morter Cardrooms and Casinos and online poker rooms dedicated to poker games.

The turning point in poker’s popularity has been traced to two key events. The invention of the hole camera used while poker players played in televised poker games. This allowed viewers to see the cards that players were holding while their opponents remained unaware of the cards. This made watching the game a more enjoyable experience with the viewer seemingly more involved in the game.

The other key event that triggered poker’s popularity was when Chris Moneymaker an amateur poker player, won a seat to the WSOP at an online poker room. He ended up winning the poker tournament and gave hope to thousands of amateur poker players that they could replicate his million dollar tournament win.
